Introduction
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) a medicinal plant and belonging to the Malvaceae family, is highly valued for its food medicinal product and ornamental uses (Richardson & Arlotta, 2021). Sustainable of medicinal plants largely depends on the efficient utilization of energy through environmentally friendly inputs (Bakhshi et al., 2025). In agricultural systems, soil and water are the two primary factors influencing crop growth and yield (Abebe et al., 2022). The application of eco-friendly inputs derived from natural and organic sources can enhance plant growth and promote environmental sustainability, more effectively than synthetic chemical fertilizers (Przemieniecki et al., 2021). Vermicompost and seaweed extracts improve soil physicochemical properties, increase nutrient uptake and enhance yield and growth characteris (Narimani et al., 2018). Therefore, the present study was conducted for the first time under the climatic conditions of Taftan County Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran with the aim of achieving maximum yield in organic roselle production.
Materials and Methods
A Split -plot-factorial experiment based a randomized complete block design with three replications was carried out in Taftan city, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, during the 2022 growing season the main plot factor consisted of solid vermicompost at two levels (0 and 10 t.ha-1). Sub-plot treatments included factorial combinations of vermicompost extract foliar application at three levels (0.5, 1 and 1.5 ml.L-1) and seaweed extract foliar application at three levels (1.5, 3 and 4.5 ml.L-1) Foliar sprays of both vermicompost and seaweed extracts were applied at three growth stages: four leaves, stem elongation, and flowering
Results and Discussion
Analysis of variance revealed that the application of solid vermicompost, vermicompost extract and seaweed extract significantly affected all measured morphophysiological traits. Moreover, the three-way interaction among solid vermicompost, vermicompost extract and seaweed extrac was significant for all traits. Mean comparisons indicated that the highest plant height values for stem diameter, number of lateral branches, number of fruits per plant, carbohydrate content, anthocyanin ingredient, economic yield, and biomass yield were obtained with the application of solid vermicompost at 10 t ha1. The maximum biomass yield (27604.2 kg.ha-1) obtained. which was 47/45% higher than the control, maximum sepal yield (2629.1 kg.ha-1) obtained. which was 33/12% higher than the control and maximum anthocyanin content (3.79 mg.g-1) obtained. which was 35/8% higher than the control. and were recorded when vermicompost extract 1.5 ml L-1 was combined with seaweed extract 4.5 ml L-1. These findings suggest that organic fertilizers, not only increase crop yield but, also enhance the accumulation of secondary metabolites in roselle, thereby improving its medicinal value. The adoption of organic fertilizers plays a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution and supporting the goals of sustainable agriculture.
Conclusion
The growing medium is one of the most important factors influencing plant growth and quality of biological inputs, through their ecological functions (Light, temperature and nutrient availability), reduce the long-term vulnerability of agricultural ecosystems, organic farming has therefore always attracted the attention of farmers. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that organic fertilizers, reduce production costs, improve both quantity and quality of plant products, and contribute to long-term soil health, biodiversity conservation, and the establishment of sustainable agricultural systems. The greatest quantitative yield and secondary metabolite content were achieved with the application 10 t ha-1 of solid vermicomposting, combined, with foliar sprays of vermicompost extract 1.5 ml.L-1 and seaweed extract 4.5 ml.L-1. These results confirm that the combined use of solid vermicompost and foliar application of vermicompost and seaweed extracts a positive effect on growth and morphophysiological traits of roselle.
