IntroductionCurrently, due to the adverse effects of climate change and rising global temperatures, agricultural yields are declining, with the most severe impacts occurring in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Drought stress is one of the most critical abiotic factors limiting plant growth and productivity in many areas, including Iran. With limited water resources and an average annual rainfall of only 250 mm approximately two-thirds less than the global average (Biglari et al., 2019). Iran is particularly vulnerable. The severity and duration of drought stress cause significant alterations in the ecophysiological, biochemical, and molecular characteristics of plants, adversely affecting both the quantity and quality of their growth and yield (Salehi-Lisar & Bakhshayeshan-Agdam, 2020). Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), as biofertilizers, enhance plant tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stresses, including drought, nutrient deficiency, heavy metal toxicity, and salinity. In medicinal plants, the application of AMF has been shown to improve photosynthesis, enhance water uptake, increase chlorophyll and carotenoid levels, and boost antioxidant enzyme activity under stressful conditions (Varma et al., 2018). Within the framework of sustainable agriculture, the use of nanotechnology-based alternatives to conventional fertilizers is considered a promising strategy to increase crop productivity and help meet the food demands of the rapidly growing global population (Liu et al., 2015). Among nanomaterials, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) have been recognized as effective stimulants of plant growth (Ingle, 2021). Additionally, intercropping one of the most important sustainable agricultural practices plays a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and improving overall productivity. Materials and MethodsThis study was carried out at the Research Farm of the Department of Plant Production and Genetics, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Maragheh. The experiment followed a split–split plot design within a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications, conducted over two consecutive years. The main factor consisted of three irrigation regimes: 25% (MAD25), 50% (MAD50), and 75% (MAD75) maximum allowable depletion (MAD) of soil available water (SAW), representing normal irrigation, mild water stress, and severe water stress, respectively. The sub-factor was planting pattern, including peppermint monoculture, sage monoculture, and peppermint–sage intercropping. The sub–sub factor involved fertilizer treatments, including: (i) no fertilizer (control), (ii) TiO₂ nanoparticles (100 mg.L⁻¹), (iii) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation, and (iv) combined application of AMF and TiO₂ (AMF + TiO₂). Each plot consisted of five planting rows, with inter-row and intra-row spacings of 40 and 25 cm, respectively, for peppermint and sage. The AMF inoculum (Funneliformis mosseae) was obtained from Varian Biotechnological Company, Karaj, Iran. At planting, 80 g of soil containing fungal hyphae (equivalent to 1000 spores per 10 g of soil) was applied to each row. Peppermint and sage seedlings were established at a density of 10 plants.m⁻². The first irrigation was applied immediately after transplanting. To facilitate seedling adaptation and optimal establishment, drought stress treatments were initiated one month after planting. Soil moisture content was monitored using a moisture meter to ensure accurate application of drought stress. At full flowering, dry matter yield, essential oil (EO) content and yield, EO composition, and photosynthetic pigments were measured. Data were tested for normality before analysis. A combined analysis of variance was performed using a two-way split–split plot design in SAS software (version 9.4). Mean comparisons were conducted using the least significant difference (LSD) test at the 5% probability level, and graphical illustrations were generated in Microsoft Excel. Results and DiscussionThe results indicated that sage dry matter yield decreased by 27% and 64.1% under mild and severe drought stress, respectively. Considering the interaction effect of cropping pattern and fertilizer sources, the highest sage dry matter yield (172.7 g m-2) was observed in monoculture with the combined application of AMF + TiO2. The combined application of AMF + TiO2 enhanced sage dry matter yield by 36.1% compared to the control (absence of fertilizer). The highest essential oil (EO) content in sage (1.33%) was obtained under intercropping with the integrated application of AMF + TiO2. Notably, EO content under mild drought stress was 41.2% higher than that under normal irrigation. Chemical analysis of EO compounds revealed that the maximum levels of dominant compounds, namely cis-thujone and 1, 8-cineole, were achieved in intercropping with AMF + TiO2 under both mild and severe stress conditions. The enhanced production of secondary metabolites serves as an effective defense mechanism in medicinal and aromatic plants, mitigating the adverse effects of drought stress. Typically, EO formation and accumulation increase under environmental stress, protecting the plant against excessive light and water deficiency. The observed increase in sage EO with AMF + TiO2 application is associated with improved photosynthetic activity, enhanced absorption and availability of key EO-forming nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, and the development of additional EO-secreting glands. ConclusionIn summary, the integrative application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi )AMF) combined with TiO₂ in the intercropping system of sage with peppermint is highly recommended as a sustainable and effective approach to improve both the yield and quality of essential oils, particularly under drought stress conditions. This strategy not only enhances plant resilience against water deficit but also promotes more efficient nutrient uptake, leading to healthier growth and higher production of valuable secondary metabolites. Implementing this combined approach can serve as a practical and eco-friendly solution for farmers seeking to optimize essential oil production while maintaining soil health and long-term agricultural sustainability.

IntroductionThe pressing need for global food security, particularly concerning strategic oilseeds like canola (Brassica napus L.), underscores the importance of increasing agricultural productivity. Mazandaran province, though a major producer, exhibits an average yield (1715 kg.ha-1) even below the national figure, with Behshahr County being a critical area within the province for production. Closing the gap between actual and potential yield remains the most effective pathway to enhanced national oilseed production. This study was specifically undertaken to quantify the yield gap and precisely identify the key managerial constraints responsible for this shortfall in irrigated canola farms within the Miankaleh district of Behshahr County, Mazandaran Province, Iran.Materials and MethodsThe research employed the Comparative Performance Analysis (CPA) methodology across two consecutive cropping seasons (2021-2022 and 2022-2023). The study involved a comprehensive field survey and detailed interviews conducted on 100 canola farms in the Miankaleh region, characterized by a moderate and humid climate. Data collection covered farmer demographics, field characteristics, and intricate details of all agronomic management practices, including land preparation, variety selection, sowing date, fertilization (base and top-dressing), pest and weed control, irrigation, and final yield. The collected data allowed for a thorough analysis, which began with the development of a yield function using stepwise multiple regression. This statistical model linked various management variables (both quantitative and qualitative) directly to grain yield, enabling the estimation of the average observed yield and the attainable potential yield by substituting average and optimal managerial values into the final, predictive model. Results and DiscussionThe average yield achieved by the surveyed farmers was calculated at 2247 kg.ha-1, whereas the estimated potential yield for the region stood at 4798 kg.ha-1. This disparity resulted in a considerable total yield gap of 2551 kg.ha-1. Importantly, the stepwise regression analysis successfully isolated and quantified the influence of six distinct managerial factors that collectively accounted for a substantial 89% of this observed yield gap, thereby providing clear targets for intervention. The single largest contributor to the yield loss was identified as the suboptimal management of plant nutrition. A detailed breakdown showed that the most significant individual constraint was the inadequate application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer, contributing a major 43 percent to the total yield gap. Following this, the insufficient or complete lack of amino acid supplements accounted for a further 16 percent reduction in yield, indicating a gap in adopting advanced nutritional practices. Additionally, a deficiency in sulfur (S) fertilizer usage contributed another 6 percent of the gap. Collectively, these nutritional deficiencies highlight that nutrient management is the dominant factor limiting current production. Beyond nutritional issues, pest control emerged as the second principal area of concern. Specifically, inadequate and untimely control of snails during the crucial early stages of the growing season was quantified as contributing a significant 22 percent to the total yield gap. Finally, poor weed management practices also played a role. This was reflected by the high frequency of herbicide application (11 percent contribution) and the need for supplementary hand weeding (1 percent contribution), both of which signal sub-optimal control strategies and increased weed competition that negatively impacts yield.ConclusionThe results unequivocally demonstrate that the most efficient pathway to closing the existing 2551 kg.ha-1 yield gap lies in the optimization of the nutritional management program. Priority must be given to ensuring adequate and timely application of key fertilizers, particularly phosphorus and sulfur, alongside the integration of beneficial supplements such as amino acids. Furthermore, the establishment of an immediate and highly effective strategy for controlling early-season pests, especially snails, is crucial. By focusing resources and efforts on these specifically quantified managerial factors, a significant portion of the current yield shortfall can be practically addressed, leading to enhanced farm profitability and a vital step towards achieving national self-sufficiency in oilseed production.AcknowledgementsThe authors would like to express their sincere gratitude to the respected farmers of the Miankaleh region for their valuable cooperation in data collection. We also acknowledge the support from the faculty and staff at Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources for their guidance and assistance during this research project.

IntroductionIdentifying land suitability and potential for various uses is crucial for conserving environmental resources and achieving sustainable agricultural production. The absence of systematic land-use planning can lead to significant socio-economic and environmental damage. Agro-ecological zoning, which integrates environmental data layers such as climate, water, topography, and soil, serves as a vital tool for agricultural planning. It allows for a comprehensive analysis of production possibilities by assessing environmental potentials and constraints, thereby enabling informed decision-making. In Iran, despite the agricultural significance of many regions, the environmental potential of most areas has not been scientifically delineated. This study was conducted to perform detailed agro-ecological zoning and estimate the production potential for rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the Yaneh-Sar District of Behshahr County, Mazandaran Province – a region with a distinct, cooler climate compared to other parts of the province, which has faced developmental challenges and agricultural issues such as declining yield per unit area. Materials and MethodsThe agro-ecological requirements for rice cultivation were first identified using scientific resources and documents. Thematic maps were then prepared for a comprehensive set of variables, including annual precipitation, average/maximum/minimum annual temperatures, total sunshine hours, relative humidity, water resources, topographic features (elevation, slope percentage and aspect), and soil properties (texture, potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen, copper, manganese, iron, organic matter, electrical conductivity, and pH). Soil sampling was conducted from 128 points across the farmlands of 49 villages in the region, and the samples were analyzed at the central laboratory of Sari University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Geostatistical and classical interpolation methods, including Ordinary Kriging, Radial Basis Functions, and Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), were employed to extrapolate these variables across the study area, with the final method selected based on the lowest Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was utilized to determine the weight of each environmental criterion, incorporating expert opinions. The weighted digital layers were then integrated within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. Land suitability was classified into four categories: highly suitable, suitable, moderately suitable, and unsuitable. Furthermore, the SSM-iCrop2 model, a native crop simulation model for Iran, was used to estimate the potential yield of paddy rice based on meteorological data, soil conditions, crop management practices, and plant parameters. Results and DiscussionThe results of the land suitability assessment revealed that only a small fraction of the agricultural land in the Hezar Jerib District is highly suitable for rice cultivation. Specifically, approximately 2.2% (637 ha) was classified as highly suitable, 16.7% (4,690 ha) as suitable, 40.5% (11,370 hectares) as moderately suitable, and 40.4% (11,355 ha) as unsuitable. The highly suitable areas are primarily confined to a narrow strip along the Nekarood River in the northern part of the region, characterized by flat terrain and proximity to water sources. The main factors limiting suitability were identified as steep slopes and inadequate water resources, with about 81% of the land deemed unsuitable or only marginally suitable due to these constraints. The SSM-iCrop2 model output indicated a potential paddy rice yield of about 3.92 tons per hectare for the region's agricultural land units. The current average yield achieved by local farmers was estimated at 3.2 tons per hectare, resulting in a relatively small yield gap of 0.72 tons per hectare. This minor gap is likely attributable to the recent adoption of modern mechanized equipment and could potentially be addressed by optimizing crop management practices, such as adjusting planting dates.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that only a limited portion of the Hezar Jerib District possesses high suitability for rice cultivation, primarily due to topographic (slope) and water resource limitations. The findings underscore the necessity of aligning agricultural activities with the ecological capacity of the land to ensure sustainability. Expanding rice cultivation into non-suitable areas would require intensive inputs and management, potentially leading to environmental degradation and long-term loss of productive resources. Therefore, rice cultivation is recommended only in limited areas that have access to sufficient water and are properly leveled. The small yield gap suggests that significant increases in yield through improved management might be challenging under the current cultivation system. Future efforts could explore alternative cultivation methods, such as aerobic rice systems, to enhance water use efficiency, provided that challenges like weed control and the identification of suitable varieties are addressed.

IntroductionRoselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) a medicinal plant and belonging to the Malvaceae family, is highly valued for its food medicinal product and ornamental uses (Richardson & Arlotta, 2021). Sustainable of medicinal plants largely depends on the efficient utilization of energy through environmentally friendly inputs (Bakhshi et al., 2025). In agricultural systems, soil and water are the two primary factors influencing crop growth and yield (Abebe et al., 2022). The application of eco-friendly inputs derived from natural and organic sources can enhance plant growth and promote environmental sustainability, more effectively than synthetic chemical fertilizers (Przemieniecki et al., 2021). Vermicompost and seaweed extracts improve soil physicochemical properties, increase nutrient uptake and enhance yield and growth characteris (Narimani et al., 2018). Therefore, the present study was conducted for the first time under the climatic conditions of Taftan County Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran with the aim of achieving maximum yield in organic roselle production. Materials and MethodsA Split -plot-factorial experiment based a randomized complete block design with three replications was carried out in Taftan city, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, during the 2022 growing season the main plot factor consisted of solid vermicompost at two levels (0 and 10 t.ha-1). Sub-plot treatments included factorial combinations of vermicompost extract foliar application at three levels (0.5, 1 and 1.5 ml.L-1) and seaweed extract foliar application at three levels (1.5, 3 and 4.5 ml.L-1) Foliar sprays of both vermicompost and seaweed extracts were applied at three growth stages: four leaves, stem elongation, and flowering Results and DiscussionAnalysis of variance revealed that the application of solid vermicompost, vermicompost extract and seaweed extract significantly affected all measured morphophysiological traits. Moreover, the three-way interaction among solid vermicompost, vermicompost extract and seaweed extrac was significant for all traits. Mean comparisons indicated that the highest plant height values for stem diameter, number of lateral branches, number of fruits per plant, carbohydrate content, anthocyanin ingredient, economic yield, and biomass yield were obtained with the application of solid vermicompost at 10 t ha1. The maximum biomass yield (27604.2 kg.ha-1) obtained. which was 47/45% higher than the control, maximum sepal yield (2629.1 kg.ha-1) obtained. which was 33/12% higher than the control and maximum anthocyanin content (3.79 mg.g-1) obtained. which was 35/8% higher than the control. and were recorded when vermicompost extract 1.5 ml L-1 was combined with seaweed extract 4.5 ml L-1. These findings suggest that organic fertilizers, not only increase crop yield but, also enhance the accumulation of secondary metabolites in roselle, thereby improving its medicinal value. The adoption of organic fertilizers plays a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution and supporting the goals of sustainable agriculture. ConclusionThe growing medium is one of the most important factors influencing plant growth and quality of biological inputs, through their ecological functions (Light, temperature and nutrient availability), reduce the long-term vulnerability of agricultural ecosystems, organic farming has therefore always attracted the attention of farmers. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that organic fertilizers, reduce production costs, improve both quantity and quality of plant products, and contribute to long-term soil health, biodiversity conservation, and the establishment of sustainable agricultural systems. The greatest quantitative yield and secondary metabolite content were achieved with the application 10 t ha-1 of solid vermicomposting, combined, with foliar sprays of vermicompost extract 1.5 ml.L-1 and seaweed extract 4.5 ml.L-1. These results confirm that the combined use of solid vermicompost and foliar application of vermicompost and seaweed extracts a positive effect on growth and morphophysiological traits of roselle.

IntroductionGiven the diversity of climate and vegetation in Iran, it has provided a great potential for entering the market of medicinal plants and herbal medicines (AmirTeimori et al., 2011). Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is one of the oldest medicinal and spice plants in Iran and the world, which is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and health industries today (Omid Beigi, 2013). Managing the use of fertilizers, including chemical fertilizers, affects the performance of medicinal plants. Proper nutrition and absorption of essential elements and improving their concentration in the seed play a significant role in increasing the quantitative and qualitative performance of the medicinal plant fennel (Kapoor et al., 2004). The present study was designed and implemented with the aim of evaluating the effect of different chemical, organic, and biological nutritional systems on the yield and nutrient absorption of fennel. Materials and MethodsThe experiment was conducted in a split-plot randomized complete block design with three replications during the 2023-2024 crop year at the research farm of Khuzestan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Khuzestan, Iran. In the main plots, the levels of Urea nitrogen fertilizer and sugarcane residue compost were: A1: control, A2: 150 kg.ha-1 nitrogen, A3: 112.5 kg.ha-1 nitrogen + 8 t.ha-1 sugarcane compost, A4: 75 kg.ha-1 nitrogen + 16 t.ha-1 sugarcane compost, A5: 37.5 kg.ha-1 nitrogen + 24 t.ha-1 sugarcane compost, and A6: 32 tons/ha sugarcane compost. In the subplots, the seed inoculation treatment with Biofarm biofertilizer was investigated, including B0: control and B1: treatment. The studied traits included grain yield, biological yield, essential oil percentage and yield, nitrogen percentage and absorption, nitrogen efficiency indices, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and zinc percentage. Results and DiscussionThe highest seed yield was obtained in the A4B0 and A2B1 treatment levels (998 and 938 kg.ha-1). The highest percentage of essential oil was obtained in the A2 treatment level (2.26%) and the highest yield of fennel essential oil was obtained in the A2B1 treatment level (13.22 kg.ha-1). The highest percentage and absorption of nitrogen were obtained in the A2 treatment level (2.35%) and (68.01 kg.ha-1), respectively. The highest agronomic efficiency of nitrogen was obtained in the A4B0 treatment level (6.85 kg.kg-1). The highest phosphorus and potassium content of the whole plant was obtained in the A5 treatment level (50.8 and 193.75 mg.kg-1), respectively, and the highest iron and zinc concentration of the whole plant was obtained in the A6 treatment level (3.01 and 0.56 mg.kg-1) of dry matter. ConclusionIn the present experiment, the highest grain yield was obtained with the application of 75 kg.ha-1of nitrogen and 16 tons.ha-1of sugarcane compost, which had no significant difference with the application of 150 kg.ha-1of nitrogen. Also, the highest biological and essential oil yield was obtained with the application of 150 kg.ha-1of nitrogen and with the application of biofertilizer. In fact, the application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer in combination with organic fertilizer of sugarcane compost and the application of biofertilizer increased grain yield and essential oil and increased the absorption of low- and high-consumption elements required by the fennel plant. It also had similar effects in increasing yield compared to the application of chemical fertilizers, which can replace combined fertilizers with chemical fertilizers.

IntroductionDue to the adverse impacts of agricultural production activities on the environment particularly water and soil pollution and pressure on limited natural resources determining an optimal cropping pattern is one of the most important management decisions. Such a decision should be made in a way that, while maintaining crop productivity and satisfactory yields, minimizes the environmental impacts associated with the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and water. Simultaneous assessment of environmental impacts and water consumption can provide valuable guidance for sustainable cropping planning in arid and water-scarce regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental impacts and water consumption of eight major agricultural crops barley, wheat, canola, maize, cucumber, onion, potato, and tomato in the arid region of Jiroft using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach and analysis of green, blue, and grey water footprints. Materials and MethodsTo this end, data on input consumption, including chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fuel and energy, as well as crop yields, were collected, and environmental impacts were calculated in three categories: human health, ecosystem quality, and resource depletion. For accurate estimation of crop water requirements and green and blue water footprints, climatic and precipitation data for the period 1993–2023 obtained from the Iranian Meteorological Organization were used, and actual crop water consumption was calculated based on effective rainfall, evapotranspiration, and crop growth period. The grey water footprint was also determined based on chemical fertilizer use and their potential impacts on water quality. Results and DiscussionThe results showed that cereal and oilseed crops such as canola, wheat, barley, and maize imposed the highest environmental burdens. Canola exhibited the greatest negative impact with a single-score value of 86.19 points, compared with cucumber (4.09 points) and onion (5.65 points). In the human health category, canola caused the highest damage (65.23 points), whereas vegetables and tuber crops showed much lower impacts. Regarding ecosystem quality, canola had the highest negative effect (20.25 points), while barley showed the lowest impact (0.33 points). In terms of resource depletion, wheat contributed the most (0.289 points), followed by canola (0.176 points). Water footprint analysis indicated that cereals had the highest blue and grey water consumption, with total water footprints of barley and wheat reaching 2508.19 and 2164.57 m³.t⁻¹, respectively, whereas vegetables and tuber crops such as potato had the lowest water footprint (182.41 m³.t⁻¹). The combined results of LCA and water footprint analysis consistently demonstrated that input-intensive and water-demanding crops such as canola and cereals exert substantial pressure on water resources and the environment, while vegetables and tuber crops have comparatively lower impacts. ConclusionBased on the LCA results and the environmental burdens of the crops, cultivation priority should be given to those with the lowest environmental impacts. Accordingly, vegetables such as cucumber and onion, as well as tuber crops like potato—which exhibit significantly lower environmental burdens—should be prioritized for cultivation. Subsequently, maize and high-input cereals such as wheat and barley may be cultivated. Canola, due to its highest environmental burden, should be placed last in the cropping priority and cultivated only under careful management of inputs and water resources in order to reduce pressure on the ecosystem and the region’s limited resources. According to the results, the water footprint and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analyses provide consistent and complementary findings. Crops with higher environmental burdens in the LCA, such as canola and cereals, also exhibit the highest blue and grey water consumption, exerting greater pressure on the region’s water resources. In contrast, crops with lower environmental burdens, such as vegetables and tuber crops, have smaller water footprints and place less strain on water resources. Based on these findings, prioritizing the cultivation of low-impact crops along with optimized management of inputs and water resources can significantly reduce environmental burdens and water consumption. This study demonstrates that integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with water footprint analysis is an effective tool for sustainable agricultural planning and for reducing pressure on limited environmental resources.
